Accent lighting is a choice about what to leave dark
Most outdoor lighting answers the question of how to light a property. Accent lighting starts somewhere else. It is not coverage. Point it at a specimen tree, a stone column, a water feature, a front door and stop. The dark part is not a gap in the plan. It is the reason the lit thing stands out. That is really the whole idea, and it is not complicated. Pick the handful worth seeing and stop there. Every plan gets pressure to grow, from the homeowner and sometimes from the company selling fixtures.
What tends to earn it
Some things take light well and plenty do not. Texture is the usual test: masonry, tree bark, timber, anything with relief in it. Flat painted siding gives you almost nothing back. Form is the other thing to look for.
The most common mistake
Plans go wrong when the list grows. The homeowner likes the first uplit tree and asks for a second, then a third, then the corners of the house, then the shrubs. At some point the property is evenly lit, and nothing stands out anymore. A disciplined plan leaves most of the property dark on purpose. The best accent plans tend to look almost underdone on paper and exactly right on the property at night, which is why they are hard to sell and easy to appreciate.
Where it sits among the other work
Accent lighting rarely stands alone. The other layers are path and bed lighting, security coverage, and the house itself. It is the difference between a lit property and a designed one.
Output is a design decision
Accent fixtures do not need to be bright. After dark the threshold is low, and too much reads as a floodlight. You are highlighting something, not lighting a work area.
From below or from above
Accent light arrives from one of two directions, and the two look nothing alike. Uplighting throws shadows upward, which nothing in nature does, so it feels staged, in a good way on the right subject. Light from above feels natural, which is exactly why it works so well over seating and paths.
Accent lighting is not set and forget
Anything aimed at planting will be aimed slightly wrong eventually. A shrub uplit perfectly this spring will have swallowed the fixture in three years. Nothing is broken. The aim just needs a look. Re aiming is worth doing periodically.Aim gets checked the way everything else here is judged: by walking out at night and seeing what the light is doing.
Having a plan drawn
Accent lighting is decided at the property, after dark, by somebody looking at it.
